A man has died and two bystanders have been injured in a freak accident following a car crash in Melbourne southeast.
The 78-year-old was driving along Ferntree Gully Rd in Wheelers Hill when he crashed into a lamp post at 7.10pm on Wednesday.
Two bystanders saw the crash and stopped to help the driver out of the car.

But moments later, a second car clipped the broken light pole, causing it to fall onto the group who were in the road.
The driver was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he later died.
The two bystanders received non-life-threatening medical treatment, and the 27-year-old man driving the second car was not injured.
Police are yet to determine exactly how the incident happened and have urged anyone with information to contact them.
