Safety car off

30/70 Verstappen sets off looking to double his lead over Russell. Here comes the rain.

29/70: In comes Charles Leclerc and for a brief moment it looks like Ferrari’s run is over. The sky is already dark and more rain is coming.

28/70: “What goes around comes around,” says Christian Horner, a reference to a safety car assisting Norris in a previous race.

27/70: Another round of safety car fun.

26/70: Norris didn’t pit, the others did. Russell almost steals a pit stop from Verstappen. Logan Sargeant’s crash causes problems. He is in an awkward spot and Norris has time to find intermediate tires. Norris comes out third, just ahead of Piastri. Sargent’s car isn’t going anywhere.

25/70: Yellow flag: Logan Sargeant in the tires. The boxes themselves are ready, but what to do with the tires. This is a safety car.

24/70: The clouds darken. Norris continues to lead ahead of Verstappen.

23/70: Norris has the fastest lap and leads by four seconds. The McLaren team is flying. The battle for fifth and sixth is Alonso, followed by Hamilton.

22/70: Norris hits DRS, goes around Russell and then the Englishman stops and Vertappen takes over as Russell wobbles as he has to make way.

21/70: Piastri is the fastest on the track, the McLaren cars are flying.

Norris overtook Verstappen!

19/70: Lando Norris set the fastest lap and he and Verstappen overtook Russell.

18/70: Verstappen wanted DRS but will now be used by Norris in his pursuit.

17/70: Verstappen failed to take the chicane and his brakes locked up. Lando Norris is the fastest on the track. Russell is forward and clear.

16/70: Hello, Max Verstappen has a spin…

15/70: The sun is shining and the temperature is 26 degrees. Norris is behind Verstappen and Russell. Both drivers are looking for water to cool the tires.

14/70: Verstappen lies waiting for Russell, who sounds a little panicked on the radio.

13/70: The chase is for the front two. A rain shower comes after 20 seconds. Hulkenberg drops to 18th after pitting. His experiment with tires was not successful.

12/70: Max flies and this time Russell is under fire. Hulkenberg is still on those tires and he’s also slowing people down. Ricciardo was penalized five seconds for a false start. He is in seventh place.

11/70: Russell, Verstappen, Norris. This is the podium as it stands now.

10/70: They tell Russell to cool his tires to stay in front. The next rain is expected on the 33rd lap.

9/70: Perez and Gasly were the two who clashed on that opening lap, with Perez still a long way back. Perez can’t help Verstappen when he’s there.

8/70: Intermediate tires for Kevin Magnussen, but his boxing is too slow to serve him. He falls back after his early jump.

7/70: Hamilton in Alonso, in 6th and 7th, almost close to each other, but showing their street smarts.

6/70: Inter tires are already faster than wet, so let’s see some changes on the field. Logan Sargeant exits turn 5, spins, but runs again.

5/70: Leclerc, with problems in his engine, is in discussions with the radio. Russell and Verstappen are at the front and staying out of trouble.

4/70: The rain is starting to ease. Nico Hulkenberg, on the same tires as Magnussen, went from 17th to seventh. Magnussen lines up much faster than Russell.

3/70: The fog that comes out is reminiscent of Japan 1976, James Hunt, Niki Lauda and all. Magnussen is ahead of Piastri and is fourth. He is having the time of his life. Gasly was involved in a slide at the start, but everything was fine, everyone came back.

2/70: Leclerc dropped back to 10th, Sainz dropped back to 15th and it could have been worse. It’s already raining and the track is flooded. Magnussen is up to sixth in these wet conditions, behind Hamilton and then fifth. Everyone else is skating around.

We’re leaving…

They crawled out and Russell held off Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton and Ricciardo tried to collide before Hamilton broke free to move up a place. There’s someone off the track at the first turn. Great stuff from Russell. Kevin Magnussen in his Haas, on wet tires, makes progress. Carlos Sainz is almost exasperating.

The drivers are without coats and in the cars, but a downpour is expected soon. The parade lap takes place amidst a whirlwind of fog from the cars. Some are panicking about tires among drivers. Time will add an extra dimension.

Martin Brundle is out for a walk in the pitsand much of the talk is about moisture.

Sounds like a runway rave, as drivers prepare to depart. Rain will cause problems here.

All that will change in 2026 – no DRS.

Red Bull’s faltering giving hope to the rest.

Saturday’s events are covered here.

Preamble

A Mercedes on a pole? It’s been a long wait, since 2022, for a Merc win and George Russell, as he will from next season, carries the flag.
