‘A good reaction’: Clarke lauds Scotland for restoring pride against Switzerland | Euro 2024

Steve Clarke praised his Scotland team for showing the true version of themselves after a great performance in a 1-1 draw with Switzerland.

Scotland were widely criticized after losing 5-1 to Germany in their Euro 2024 opener, but this result in Cologne keeps alive hopes of a place in the last 16, which should be secured if they beat Hungary in Stuttgart on Sunday.

“That’s the way we’ve been playing as a team for the last three or four years,” Clark said. “That’s why we’re here for a tournament. We knew what we had to do. It was a good team performance against a good opponent.

“We will feel much better in the next game on the back of this performance. This is how we play, this is how we work. Apart from the dirty side of the game, we can play. We got the ball down and created a few chances. We did what we had to do, we’re still in the race and that was the most important thing. That’s what we expected: a good response from a disappointing night. We are still alive in the tournament.”

Scotland took the lead after Scott McTominay’s shot was deflected into the Swiss net by Fabian Scherr. Xherdan Shaqiri equalized before half-time.

“The reality is when the draw ends and we’re up against the hosts in the first game, you look at the other two games in the group and think, ‘Maybe that’s where the points will come from,'” Clarke said. “That’s how it turned out.

“Everyone was trying to exaggerate the fact that we had to take something from this game, but the reality was that even if we had played well against Germany, we probably would have been in a similar position of having to take something from this game to keep alive we enter the last match. That is what we have done.”

Clarke has confirmed that Kieran Tierney will miss the Hungary match after suffering what appears to be a serious thigh injury.
